The aged care system is complex, and many consumers initially confuse aged care support services with independent living options such as retirement villages.
Many Home Care places and aged care support services are funded by government, and most people choose to stay in their own home for as long as possible, with support services if available.
But for those who need high level care in a residential setting, moving to an aged care facility may be the only option.
To access any government funded aged care services, you will first need to have an assessment of your care needs. This will determine which subsidised services you are eligible for.
Private aged care services are also available to those who can afford them.
More information about assessment of care needs is available on the Australian Government's My Aged Care website.
