Shout out to property managers - we need rental listings to meet strong demand

Research by the Productivity Commission[1] in 2015 found that 15% of older Australians rent their home. However, this figure could be set to rise as poor housing affordability makes it increasingly difficult to buy a first home, and low super levels could see downsizers opt to rent rather than buy a place of their own.

Right now, plenty of empty nester are looking to rent a downsized home. There may be no official figures on this but receives plenty of enquiries from downsizers and retirees, all hoping to rent a low maintenance property where they can enjoy a wealth of facilities. We’re fielding requests for a wide variety of accommodation from 1-bedroom apartments, to units in retirement villages, and even shared accommodation arrangements.

The Federal Government has introduced initiatives such as bringing forward funding for 10,000 more home care packages for senior Australians. But this certainly doesn’t help empty nesters and downsizers who plan to rent.

A good fit for property managers

With such a large volume of calls and emails from downsizers – many of whom are quite desperate to find the ideal rental property, it’s clear that there is a high level of demand that is not being met in the market. is a good fit for property managers, who have properties ideally suited to the needs of empty nesters and downsizers. And no, that doesn’t just mean retirement villages or over-50s complexes. Downsizers often look for modern apartments with 2-3 bedrooms and plenty of storage.
