One of the newest residents at Aveo’s The Newstead Residences describes life at the luxurious retirement community as a permanent holiday in a luxury hotel.
Resident Patricia Keogh says the lifestyle is ‘magical’ in her ninth-floor, one-bedroom apartment, boasting stunning views of Brisbane City and the Story Bridge.
“I moved in early December last year and for the first few weeks I expected someone to come up to me and say ‘Okay, it’s time to leave and go home’. It seemed too good to be true,’’ she said.
Now she says she feels right at home.
Mrs Keogh relocated to The Newstead Residences from another retirement community in Logan to be closer to family after the passing of her husband.
“My daughter Judy, who lives at Newstead with her family, encouraged me to move closer,’’ she said. “Now I am a five-minute stroll away from her not a 45-minute drive away.'
A keen walker, Mrs Keogh enjoys daily strolls around the vibrant inner-city riverside suburb.
“All I need to do is take the lift downstairs and head off on a walk along the river. The other day I ran into my granddaughter, Tilly, who was surprised to see me on the path,’’ she said.
“I no longer drive but I easily hop on a bus or ferry to the city or go downstairs to the Gasworks precinct where there is a supermarket, restaurants, doctors, dentists, an optometrist and chemist.’’
The 19-storey luxury vertical village provides residents with a range of resort-style facilities, including an a la carte restaurant, bar, community centre, cinema, gym, library, hair and treatment salon, billiards, virtual golf, library, and outdoor bowling lawn and terrace.
“There are so many areas in the community where I can entertain the family but we all love the rooftop area and viewing deck,’’ Mrs Keogh said.
“Recently the family had a wonderful afternoon in the golf simulator room and playing snooker. I really appreciate that the Aveo team here encourages visiting family members to enjoy the facilities with the residents.’’
Granddaughter Tilly Hawkins says her grandmother has happily embraced her new lifestyle at The Newstead Residences.
“I feel fortunate to have Gran living close and I plan to spend more time with her and include myself in the culture at Aveo that has so gracefully welcomed her,’’ she said.
“My mother and I have adopted a fortnightly routine to join Gran on level 19 to enjoy the city views for our rooftop wine nights.’’
Mrs Keogh says her one-bedroom, modern apartment is perfectly sized to meet her needs. “It suits me well and with a full oven, dishwasher and my airfryer, I still enjoy cooking for myself. I get some help with cleaning but I manage happily in my own apartment.
“I love the easy, secure lifestyle with everything so well organised for residents. A concierge is on hand if I need to book any maintenance and our Community Manager Brendan is very helpful. It’s a very supportive place.
“While I’m a very independent person who is quite happy in my own company, I do enjoy Wednesday morning tea for residents and the Sunday afternoon concerts, while making new friends.
“I have no regrets at all. It’s the best move I could have made.’’
