Quick facts

About Townshend

Brothers Vernon and Mervyn Townshend founded the business, which is family-owned. Its retirement villages are in Victoria, including Melbourne's outer east. Each one is built for independent living, so you move in to run your own life your own way. For many people downsizing, that independence is the point of the move, so it is worth asking early how day-to-day life works in the village you are looking at.

At Maranoa Close, units are strata titled and the title is registered in the purchaser's name. Ask what that means for you in practice, and have a solicitor explain the contract before you commit, because the legal form of your home affects what you can do with it later. Townshend looks after external building maintenance and the gardens, which frees you from the worries of a larger home and garden. Handing over that upkeep can give you back time and energy, although it is sensible to ask exactly what is looked after and what remains your responsibility.

Maranoa Close Retirement Village is part of the Townshend Homes Group of Companies. The group is also a builder and land developer. Knowing who stands behind a village is a useful part of comparing your options, so ask the village to explain how it is run and who you would deal with day to day.

Costs & fees

Pricing is one of the first things to settle when you plan a move, and the figure that matters is the one that applies to the specific home you are considering. For a current price, call Townshend directly on 0418356442 or enquire through the listing for the community you're interested in. When you ask, request the details in writing and find out what you would pay on entry and on an ongoing basis, then set those figures against your budget and what you expect to receive from selling your current home. It also helps to ask what the contract says about the end of your stay, so there are no surprises later.

Care & lifestyle services

Townshend villages are made for independent living, and support is there as your needs change. A 24-hour emergency service runs day and night, and Maranoa Close also lists personal security. Assistance is organised as required, so you can stay independent in your own home for longer. It is worth asking how that assistance is arranged, who you would call and how quickly help can be put in place, because planning ahead is easier than organising support in a hurry.

Maranoa Close is designed for independent living, with no serviced apartments or on-site aged care listed. Instead, you arrange the help you need around your own home, and you stay where your neighbours and routines are. If you think you may need more support in future, ask about your options and how they would work, so you can decide whether the village will keep suiting you as your needs change.

Shared spaces give you easy ways to meet people. Lounges and barbecue areas bring neighbours together. Think about whether spaces like these would suit the way you like to spend your week, and visit in person to see how they feel.

What makes Townshend different

Townshend sells and runs its own homes, and the prices of homes for sale are published openly. Published prices give you something concrete to work with when you set a budget and compare villages side by side. Add a 24-hour emergency service, and you get a village where help is close and daily life stays simple. Close help matters more as you get older, so consider how you would manage if you needed assistance at night or on a day when you are on your own. Ask to see how the service works, and speak with current residents if the village allows it, so you can judge for yourself.
