Residents in a refurbished inner-Brisbane retirement village are able to enjoy stunning city views, and stroll to cafes and shops, with many apartments available for a relatively affordable $300,000.

BlueCare’s Tangara retirement village is located at West End in Brisbane’s inner-south.

The eight-storey complex is located just 1.5km from Brisbane CBD, and within walking distance to the Brisbane River and Southbank cultural precinct. It’s also just 50m from West End’s buzzing Boundary St, which is full of eating and shopping opportunities.

Downsizers moving in

Village manager Suzanne Shipp told Downsizing.com.au that the village was proving increasingly attractive to younger retirees.

“We are finding the village is popular with anyone who wants to take the next step to downsize,” Suzanne said. “However, it is becoming particularly appealing to people who are recently retired, or are still doing some work and in semi-retirement.”

“For these types of incoming residents, I think the great lifestyle location and the affordability of the apartments is a big factor.

“They have an apartment where they can have a desk and high-speed internet to do some work, and walk to chemists, doctors, shops, supermarkets and cafes.

“For others, the fact they can release a lot of equity for retirement from their existing home, or stay in the same area, is also a big factor.”

About the apartments

Tangara features 79 apartments, of which 77 are one-bedroom and two are two-bedroom.

One-bedroom Tangara apartments are generally available for between $264,000 to $345,000 (depending on view and layout). This compares to West End’s current $1.7m median house price and $690,000 median unit price.

Currently, a two-bedroom Tangara apartment is also available for $405,000.

Apartments tend to either have views into the Brisbane CBD, or back out to Mt Coot-ha, and have been designed to pick up cooling Brisbane breezes and avoid the harsh western sun.

Village facilities and refurbishment

Inside the village, residents have access to games, community and pool rooms, along with a BBQ area, gym, hairdresser, library and gardens.

Tangara’s billiards room

Tangara’s building facade, reception area and games, community and pool rooms have all recently been refurbished, through the work of architect Tim Woodfield.

This has created a modern yet comfortable feel for common areas, including through the use of new furniture, updated floor finishes and timber detailing.

Works are now underway to improve the layout of some units and balconies, and upgrade the resident BBQ area.

“The works have gone down really well with the residents, who are enjoying the fact the building has a more modern feel, and that common areas are now brighter and more functional,” Suzanne said.

Welcoming community

Suzanne said the Tangara community was very inviting to incoming residents.

“We have a good community of about 70 residents, who are welcoming and look out for each other, while still respecting personal space,” Suzanne said.

“When new residents move in, our current residents invite them to our regular Monday morning tea. Most of our new residents have fitted in really well.”

Regular social activities include trivia events, exercise classes, monthly lunch outings, BYO happy hours, darts contests and garden and knitting groups.

Residents are able to keep pets, if prior approval is obtained.

Tangara has visitor parking, to allow family and friends to easily visit. The complex also features a lift to elevated units and a 24-hour emergency response system.

What’s more, as the village is operated by BlueCare, residents are also able to use BlueCare’s home care and in-home support services, including for assistance with housework, transport around town and allied health services.
