About Uniting
The communities are grouped into six regions, covering Sydney, the south coast, the central and north coast, the Riverina and Canberra. You can choose an apartment or a villa, and each community has its own feel. It is worth visiting more than one if you can, because the best way to judge how a village suits you is to see it in person.
Uniting looks after the common areas and the gardens, so your time goes to family, friends and the things you enjoy. Amenities and activities vary from community to community, so ask what is on offer at the one you like rather than assuming.
Uniting is a signatory of the Retirement Living Code of Conduct. It is the retirement living industry's own voluntary code, setting standards for how operators treat residents. For you, that means Uniting has publicly committed to those standards. When you compare operators, it is reasonable to ask how each one puts such a code into practice, and what you can expect in writing. Uniting NSW.ACT is the not-for-profit operator and supports the mission of the Uniting Church.
Costs & fees
Pricing is one of the first things to settle when you plan a move, and the figures that matter are the ones for the specific home you are considering. Recurrent charges vary from village to village. For a current price, call Uniting directly on 1800 864 846 or enquire through the listing for the community you're interested in. When you ask, request the details in writing and find out what you would pay on entry and on an ongoing basis, then set those figures against your budget and what you expect to receive from selling your current home. It is also sensible to have a solicitor go through the contract with you before you sign.
Care & lifestyle services
You can stay independent in your own home for longer, with support added as your needs change, so you do not have to decide everything at once. Where assisted living is offered, Uniting's qualified and trained staff support you with care or assistance, and a Home Care Package or CHSP funding can contribute towards the cost. A 24-hour emergency call and response system is monitored. Ask how these services are arranged, who you would contact and how funding applies to your situation, because planning ahead is easier than organising help in a hurry.
Assisted living services are offered at selected communities only, and residential aged care homes sit nearby at some. If you think you may need more support in future, ask about your options at the community you like so you can judge whether it will keep suiting you.
Residents enjoy social activities, clubs and onsite amenities. Each community sets its own mix, so you can choose the lifestyle that suits you. Think about which activities you would actually use week to week, and visit in person to see how the spaces feel.
What makes Uniting different
More than 1,735 residents already live independently in Uniting communities, so you would be joining a large, established group of neighbours. A community of that size can mean more people to meet and more going on day to day. When you visit, ask residents how they found settling in, what they enjoy most and what they wish they had known before they moved.
Uniting is certified by the Customer Service Institute of Australia to the International Customer Service Standard. That means its service to customers has been assessed against a recognised standard. Certification is a useful signal, but it is no substitute for asking your own questions and speaking with people who live in the community.
