For Jeff Burchell, community isn’t just a word, it’s a way of life. The Verge Retirement Village resident has been recognised for his outstanding dedication to bringing people together, receiving two major honours at the 2025 Gold Coast Volunteer Awards, presented by Federal Member for Moncrieff, Angie Bell MP.
He was awarded both the Central Gold Coast Community Volunteer Award and the prestigious Gladys Moncrieff Award, acknowledging his remarkable service and leadership across the region, especially within The Verge community.
A driving force at The Verge
Since moving to RetireAustralia’s The Verge almost four years ago, Jeff has become a cornerstone of village life. As Head of the Social Committee, Vice Chair of the Residents’ Committee, and a member of the Financial Review Panel, he’s known for his can-do attitude and his genuine commitment to bringing people together.
Working alongside RetireAustralia, Jeff helped establish the village’s library and cinema room, creating welcoming spaces for residents to gather, relax, and connect.
Under his leadership, the social village’s calendar has flourished. Weekly happy hours, bingo and trivia nights, and the ever-popular monthly men’s breakfast—often featuring guest speakers from local, state, and federal government—have become fixtures of village life.
Jeff has also been instrumental in building connections beyond The Verge, coordinating inter-village activities with other RetireAustralia communities. Highlights include a friendly bowls challenge and a day trip to Toowoomba for the Carnival of Flowers.
These initiatives have not only strengthened friendships but also created lasting memories for residents across RetireAustralia communities.
As Jeff puts it, “It’s all about connection and community — creating opportunities for people to come together, have fun, and support each other.”
Recognised for a lifetime of service
While Jeff’s contributions to The Verge are extraordinary, his commitment to service extends far beyond village life. He currently serves as Vice President of The Association of Residents of Queensland Retirement Village (ARQRV), advocating for the rights and wellbeing of retirement village residents across the state.
Jeff has also played a key role in community fundraising initiatives, lending his energy and leadership to causes that matter. From supporting local events to championing health-related fundraisers like the Jog for Jugs breast cancer initiative, his efforts have helped raise awareness and bring people together in support of meaningful change.
Just days after receiving his Gold Coast Volunteer Awards, Jeff was also honoured with life membership at the Mermaid Beach Bowls Club, recognising his years of dedication, leadership, and service as Club Chairman.
When asked about his achievements, Jeff said humbly, “I’m chuffed! I just do what I do, and I’m humbled by it all.”
Building a caring community
Jeff’s leadership has made a tangible difference for both residents and team members at The Verge. Village Manager Tarmar Christensen shares, “Jeff’s energy and support make my job easier and the village a more connected, caring place to live.”
Jeff’s influence can be felt every day—from the laughter at social events to the friendships formed and the pride residents take in their community. His story perfectly captures what life at The Verge is all about.
